MERMAID is a self-governing institution, identifying and financing groundbreaking international research projects within gynaecological cancer research. With the aid of funding from private persons and foundations, MERMAID is performing research within the areas of prevention, early diagnostics, and treatment of gynaecological cancer.
MERMAID is thus a series of frontline projects within gynaecological cancer. Once a project achieves full financing, another project is selected.
The aim of the project is to be among the most groundbreaking worldwide within gynaecological cancer. This is ensured by selecting the projects through a group of independent, leading scientists who also monitor the projects and perform an annual 'research audit'.
Based on unique collections of tissue samples, cell samples, and blood samples the research projects will over periods of approximately 5 years test various hypotheses, and test and develop new methods for preventing gynaecological cancer or enabling early diagnosis, which is crucial for the overriding goal of significantly reducing mortality from gynaecological cancer.
